From Losantiville to now
1788
Losantiville founded
Settlers land at the mouth of the Licking River and lay out a town opposite it on the Ohio's north bank.
1790
Renamed Cincinnati
Governor Arthur St. Clair renames the settlement for the Society of the Cincinnati, after the Roman farmer-general Cincinnatus.
1811
Steamboats arrive
The first steamboat reaches the public landing, and Cincinnati becomes the West's busiest inland port.
1830s
Porkopolis
Pork packing makes the city the meat capital of the country — and gives Procter & Gamble its raw materials.
1840s–70s
The Over-the-Rhine Germans
Tens of thousands of German immigrants settle north of the canal, building breweries, beer gardens, churches and the lagering tunnels still under the streets.
